Introduction

Malawi ranks as the fourth-poorest nation globally, with approximately 70 percent of its citizens surviving on less than $2.15 per day, according to 2019 data. Despite this figure remaining relatively steady since 2010 at 68 percent, the country's population growth has led to an additional 3 million people falling below the poverty line, totalling 13 million in the span of a decade. More than half of Malawi's population struggles with poverty, while one-fifth grapples with extreme poverty. Access to essential resources such as clean water, education, sanitation, and healthcare continues to pose significant challenges, particularly in rural areas.

Impacts of Child Poverty

Approximately 85% of adolescents aged 15 to 17 have not completed primary school, while 78% of children lag two or more grades behind their age level. Within the 15 to 17 age bracket, 13% of youths struggle with illiteracy. Malawi's educational system is strained, resulting in subpar educational achievements such as low literacy rates and significant dropout rates, especially among young girls. The system's challenges are compounded by students frequently enrolling and then discontinuing their education due to recurring illnesses or the need to fulfil job and family duties.

By 2026, our aim is to empower 100 young individuals to achieve self-reliance, enabling them to surmount the challenges they encounter. Our curriculum will encompass the following courses:
